CLEVELAND - It appears a hacker took over Burger King's Twitter account and used the profile and feed to promote the company's biggest rival -- McDonald's.

On Monday afternoon, Burger King’s Twitter feed switched over featuring McDonald’s logo while promoting the competitor's fare.

It appears the hack job started at noon, with a tweet sent out from the official @BurgerKing Twitter account,  “We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you @DFNCTSC.”

The verified account, which has more than 84,000 followers, has sent out more than 1,200 tweets since the account was created July 16, 2010, according to twbirthday.com.

Many of Burger King's followers immediately took notice.

@ryancworkman tweeted, “The fact that @BurgerKing got hacked and turned into a @McDonalds feed is pretty funny. Never know what is going to happen in social media.”

“Somebody needs to tell Burgerking that ‘whopper123’ isn’t a secure password,” tweeted @flibblesan .

“We’re guessing the @BurgerKing social media team is having a bad day …” tweeted @YourAnonNews .

Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, Burger King's Twitter account was suspended. However, in the hour that it was hacked, the account gained nearly 20,000 new followers.
