CLEVELAND - Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, is announcing plans Tuesday that it will hire more than 100,000 United States veterans over the next five years.
The store’s plans were first announced by the New York Times.
The announcement is expected to be delivered by president and chief executive of Wal-Mart U.S., William S. Simon, during a speech to the National Retail Federation in New York City.
Wal-Mart’s campaign to hire veterans is expected to begin on Memorial Day this year, which falls on May 27. The veterans must have left the service within the past year with an honorable discharge.
First Lady Michelle Obama reportedly supports Wal-Mart’s plan.
The unemployment rate for veterans suggests it remains a challenge for many to find work after service. Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the U.S.
