MEDINA, Ohio - A backyard tradition means a big score for a local charity.
Forty-eight players from four squads battled each other during two-hand touch football games.
The Meadows Turkey Bowl, held for the 21st year, raised $90,000 for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. That was a record for the annual fundraiser, which was held behind the home of Mike Meadows on Hood Road in Medina.
The previous record was set last year when $70,000 was raised.
This is the seventh year that the event has served as a fundraiser. The first year only $800 was raised.
Given the down economy, Meadows was surprised and thankful for the generous donations.
"It's an extraordinary effort by just a group of guys that have come together to reach out to family and friends," Meadows said.
The rain and the mud didn't slow down the competition. For some, it's a chance to relive those high school gridiron days. For others, it's simply about a band of brothers and a fellowship of friends.
But for all of them, helping out the needy is the biggest motivator to play football on Thanksgiving.
"The real story is about the people that aren't going to be able to find food this year," said Patrick Gould, of Sagamore Hills.
$90,000 will go a long way to help those people. St. Vincent de Paul Society helps the needy through a food pantry and by paying for medication, rent and utilities.
Jo Meadows, the mother of Mike Meadows, was a proud spectator in the crowd. She even got knocked down and muddied after a player slid into her, but she wasn't hurt. Getting a little dirty was all worth it.
"It's become a ministry. It's a game, but it's also helping the poor," Jo said.
