PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A 23-year-old mother of a 4-year-old child died after she was allegedly struck by a car driven by her ex-boyfriend and father of her child, 24-year old Todd O'Brien.
According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at 3:31 p.m. on Tuesday from Kayelee Martin. She wanted to file a report regarding O'Brien. She claimed that he tried to run over her, her current boyfriend and her 4-year-old child. She reported that it happened at Cambridge Condominiums at approximately 3:20 p.m. and that O'Brien had left the area.
Deputies said that 4 minutes later, the Lake County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a male who reported a vehicle having just struck a female and then backed over top of the female. This incident was also reported as having happened at Cambridge Condominiums.
Martin was the woman who was struck by the vehicle, but it actually happened on Barrington Ridge at the south entrance to Cambridge Condominiums.
Deputies arrived at the scene at 3:39 p.m. and determined that Martin and her current boyfriend had been walking at the southern end of Cambridge Condominiums when O'Brien arrived back in the area. A dispute started between O'Brien and Martin's boyfriend. Deputies said that O'Brien backed his vehicle into Martin and knocked her to the ground and then dragged her beneath his vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner.
Deputies said that there was an active protection order in effect protecting Martin from O'Brien.
After leaving the scene, deputies said that O'Brien later turned himself in to the Chardon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Once there, he confessed to operating his vehicle in a reckless manner and striking Martin.
O'Brien has been booked in the Lake County Jail on felony charges of aggravated vehicle homicide, violating a temporary protection order and failure to report striking a person. He is being held without bond.
O'Brien was in court Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty. His bond was set at $500,000.
Police are continuing to investigate and have subpoenaed phone records and are looking at car’s black box.
