Vehicle carrying 8 people crashes, kills 6 teens in Warren when car goes off road and in swamp

WARREN, Ohio - Six teens are dead in Warren after a driver loses control of a vehicle and flips it into a swamp, authorities said.

Officials say eight teenagers were inside a Honda Passport when the driver lost control on Pine Avenue SE, went off the road and hit a guardrail before flipping into a swamp.

The wreck happened around 6:50 Sunday morning.

A Warren police officer believes speed was a factor, estimating the SUV was traveling around 70 mph in the industrial area. At a news conference Sunday night, State Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Holt said that speed was a factor but investigators were still trying to determine the exact speed at the time of the crash.

Holt said no one in the vehicle had permission to take it but there were no reports of a theft. The vehicle was licensed to a resident of Youngstown, about 20 miles away, he said.

At 4:15 p.m., authorities released the names of the teens who were killed:

Alexis Cayson, age 19
Andrique Bennett, age 14
Kirklan M. Behner, age 15
Daylan Ray, age 15
Brandon A. Murray, age 17
Ramone M. White, age 15

Two of the teens, both 15, were brought to a hospital "in full cardiac arrest," St. Joseph Health Center nursing supervisor Julie Gill said, and were pronounced dead there. She said they were treated for hypothermic drowning trauma, indicating they had been submerged in cold water.

Two teen boys who survived, Brian Henry, 18, and Asher Lewis, 15, were treated for bruising and other injuries and released, she said. The survivors escaped and ran a quarter-mile to a home to call 911, the highway patrol said.

It remains unclear where the teens were headed.
