LAKEWOOD, Ohio - The mayor of Lakewood has declared a local state of emergency after severe weather damaged more than 100 homes Friday.
High winds, rain and hail ripped through Lakewood Friday night, leaving power outages and damage in its wake. Trees toppled and branches fell on houses and cars.
Lakewood Mayor Edward FitzGerald called it the worst storm to hit the city in 20 years. Roughly 133 homes were damaged and the mayor has asked for help from FEMA.
Declaring the state of emergency will help get state and federal funding to assist with the cleanup.
“No injuries reported citywide and a lot of that was plain old luck because you had trees coming and crashing through some bedrooms and it just so happened most people were watching the Cavs game,” FitzGerald said.
Tree crews were still lined up along Clifton Boulevard on Monday, where many buildings were damaged.
