CHARDON, Ohio - According to the Geauga County Sheriff, about 90 people were stuck on a ski lift at Alpine Valley Ski Area Saturday afternoon.
A ski lift at Alpine Valley Ski Area suffered a mechanical issue at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Everyone was rescued from the ski lift without injury with the help of nearly a dozen local rescue crews who specialize in this kind of rope rescue.
The Munson Township Fire Department was in charge of the rope rescue efforts.
Some passengers were stuck on the ski left for two to three hours. The main concern of the rescue crews was the cold temperatures.
Rescue crews tossed blankets and hand warmers up to the stranded passengers to help keep them warm in the bitter cold temperatures.
According to the Alpine Valley Manager, a “mechanical failure” caused the lift to get stuck.
Passengers were stuck dangling about 20 to 30 feet above the slopes while waiting for rescue crews to lower the passengers one by one.
The last skier was brought down at around 5 p.m.
Alpine Valley Ski Area was still up and running during this rescue effort. Some stuck passengers even continued their day on the slopes after the rescue.
The general manager with the ski area said the lift will be operational by midweek.
