LAKE TOWNSHIP, Ohio - More than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed in Lake Township in Wood County by the EF-4 tornado that moved through this weekend.
The Lake Township Police Department was also hit hard by the twister. Most of the cars were tossed in the high winds, with one being found about a mile away.
On Wednesday, the University of Akron Police Department drove two of their cruisers to the area left in shambles by the storm and handed over the keys.
“As shocking as this whole event is and the tragic loss of life, almost deeply as shocking is the outpouring of support,” Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer said. “People are coming forward, that we’ve never met, to get us back on our feet.”
But the calls keep coming into the area, with offerings of support.
Hummer told NewsChannel5 the mayor of Altoona, Ala. called and said “Chief, whatever you need, if you need fire trucks, if you need police cars, if you need police officers, if you need dump trucks, we’re on our way.”
