CHARDON, Ohio - Hundreds of people gathered in silence outside a Chardon church Saturday morning to prevent a group from protesting the funeral of a Chardon High School shooting victim.

More than 1,600 people joined a Facebook group this week that called for a “human barricade” against members of the Westboro Baptist Church. The WBC threatened to protest 16-year-old Danny Parmertor's funeral at Church of Saint Mary on Saturday morning.

One member of the WBC posted on Twitter, “Westboro Baptist Church intends a street-preach at #OhioHighSchool Funerals regarding God’s hand, judgments and vengeance in this affair. ”

Alex Pavlick, who created the Facebook group, said he is just trying to protect the Parmertor family from an intrusive display of hate.

“This is NOT a protest. This is an assembly. We are not here to show our dislike for the Westboro Baptist Church,” wrote Pavlick. “We are not here to assault the Westboro Baptist Church. We are not here to voice our opinions on members of the Westboro Baptist Church. We are here to do everything we legally can to help the Parmertor family grieve properly, BURY THEIR SON and not have a horrible day made even worse by a group of extremists.”
