AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron point guard Alex Abreu pleaded guilty to drug charges on Monday.
The star basketball player was arrested on March 7 after Akron police said he accepted a package containing five pounds of marijuana.
Abreu pleaded guilty to trafficking in marijuana, which is a third-degree felony, court officials said. He was given a two-year prison sentenced, but that was suspended.
He was placed on probation for 18 months. Abreu was fined $5,000, but it was waived because he signed a poverty affidavit. His driver’s license was also suspended for six months.
The University of Akron basketball team won the Mac Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament without Abreu. The Zips lost to VCU 88-42.
