AKRON, Ohio - Firefighters have not found the 12-year-old Akron boy who disappeared into a creek on Thursday.
Rescue crews were called to the Timber Top Apartments off of Portage Trail at about 6 p.m. Thursday. Akron police said 12-year-old Nicholas Shaffer was dangling his feet in the water near his mother when he jumped in. Neighbors, hearing the screams from the boy’s sister, rushed to join the search.
Twelve agencies with five boats combed the Mud Brook Thursday night, but they did not find Nicholas. The recovery operation began Friday morning.
By 5 p.m., all search boats were pulled from the water and firefighters walked the creek banks for signs of the boy.
The recovery efforts will resume on Saturday, but authorities said the last time someone drowned in the area, the body wasn’t found for weeks. The flood-swollen Mud Brook, which feeds into the Cuyahoga River, is running dangerously fast, but is expected to fall several feet during drier weather in coming days.
Police said Nicholas has autism and his sister said he does not know how to swim.
