AKRON, Ohio - Authorities were searching Friday for a possible body and two safes in Portage Lakes.
Divers began searching Thursday night after receiving a "credible" tip. The search continued Friday morning.
After hours of scouring the North Reservoir area, bones were found on an island.
"Through our investigation, we received information that there could be multiple bodies in this lake area," explained Summit County Sheriff's Inspector Bill Holland. "We have a list of missing people, but we're not saying that any of these people are who we're searching for."
Around 10:45 a.m. Friday, divers found bones on a small island in the lake, behind Dollar Drive in Coventry Township. Summit County Medical Examiner Gary Guenther determined the bones were from an animal.
As of 4:15 p.m. Friday, no bodies were found and divers called off searching the area the size of nearly four football fields in water 30-feet deep.
Sonar did not detect a safe or any weapons in the water, only a piece of plywood and an anchor.
News Channel 5 checked with the Green Fire Department, Coventry Township Fire Department, Akron Fire Department and the Summit County Sheriff's office. All said they did not plan to resume searching this weekend.
The "tip" came into the Summit County Sheriff's Department recently. The agency then coordinated a dive with the Green Fire Department, which was already planning a training drill in the lake Friday.
