BARBERTON, Ohio - A Barberton man, accused of using multiple martial arts-style knives to kill his mother, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to aggravated murder.
Michael Petrie, 32, was arraigned via video in Barberton Municipal Court where his bond was continued at $1 million.
Police said Petrie murdered his mother, 67-year-old Maureen Petrie, in October and continued to live with the decomposing body for six months.
Authorities said Petrie used aerosol spray, carpet cleaner and cigar smoke to cover up the smell of his mother’s decomposing body.
Michael Petrie is due in Summit County Common Pleas Court on April 24 at 8 a.m.
Barberton police arrested the 32-year-old after making a welfare check at the house on 23rd Street on April 3. Family members contacted police to say they hadn’t heard from Maureen Petrie in about six months.
Detectives said Petrie confessed to the murder and told police the date of the crime.
