AKRON, Ohio - An Akron police officer has been charged with assault for his alleged involvement in a fight outside a bar.
Officer Tito Corral, 33, was in a verbal altercation outside the Holiday Lounge on Hilbish Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 20, 2011. The five-year veteran of the police department punched a 28-year-old man, knocking him to the ground, according to Akron police.
The victim hit his head on the ground and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
On Thursday, Corral was formally charged with assault, but he had been on suspension since May. Police said Corral was suspended because of unrelated, domestic incidents.
Chief of the Office of Professional Standards and Accountability James Nice has recommended that Corral be dismissed from the department.
