AKRON, Ohio - An Akron man has been found guilty in the death of his 11-week-old daughter.
The child’s mother noticed that Avionna Helms was lethargic, wasn’t eating and had bruising on the side of her head, police said. The baby was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she died on May 4, 2011.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said the baby suffered “multiple injuries.” and died from blunt force trauma to the head.
U.S. Marshals caught up with her baby’s father, Dennis Watson, just one day later in Columbus. He was arrested while trying to get into a car driven by his father, who tried to run over one of the deputies, authorities said.
On Tuesday, Watson was convicted of murder and endangering children, court documents said. He was sentenced to life in prison with the eligibility of parole after 15 years.
