CANTON, Ohio - Special Olympians representing the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities brought home 63 medals from the State Summer Games at Ohio State University.

The games were held June 23-24 and more than 50 athletes competed in track and field, bocce, and bowling. Stark team's final medal count was 23 golds, 27 silvers, and 13 bronze.

Kicking off the games, Stark DD athlete Anthony Anderson ran the Olympic torch into the OSU stadium and lit the Olympic Flame at the opening ceremonies.

Thirteen athletes were double-medal winners. Brian Dunnivan brought home double gold medals for the 100M and 200M run.

Cherie Brandenstein won the gold medal in the 200M run and a silver in the standing long jump.

Four athletes brought home double silver medals: Steven Anderson took silver in the 400M dash and shotput ; Paul Gines won the silver in the 400M and 200M run; Anthony Anderson took the silver medal in the 1500M and 800M run; Terry Weekly brought home silver in the mini javelin and 400M walk.

Indoors, the bowling lanes were hot for Stark athletes, as 12 bowlers nabbed gold medals. Three athletes snagged silver medals, four took home bronze medals and there was one 4th place finish.

Both of the Stark DD Bocce 4-person teams scored big this weekend, grabbing both the gold and silver medals. Players Amy Marginean, Chris Florea, Mary Beth Myers, Paul Klaus, Natalie Trump and Mike Busto were double medal winners, competing in both the 4-person and 2-person Bocce teams.
