CANTON, Ohio - Five Stark County residents were indicted in an illegal sports betting operation on Wednesday.
Joseph D. Nemeth, 49, and Rhona S. Albaugh, 45, of Uniontown and Joseph M. Nemeth, 75, Helen C. Nemeth, 75, and Robert T. Johns, 66, of Canton, face one count each of conspiracy to launder money. Joseph D. Nemeth was also charged with one count of transmitting wagering information in interstate commerce.
According to the indictment, Joseph D. Nemeth took bets on professional and college basketball and football games. He used an offshore gambling website to recorder the wagers and had gamblers pay their losses to Albaugh by check, the indictment said. Joseph D. Nemeth invested the money into real estate and construction projects.
Between 2004 and 2013, the defendants tried to launder at least $530,000, according to the indictment.
