MANSFIELD, Ohio - Troopers from the Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that closed a portion of I-71 south for several hours on Saturday.
Troopers said the crash happened around 2:45pm Interstate 71 southbound near the 159 mile post.
A 2007 Chevy Cavalier, driven by 27-year-old Paula Brown of Hilliard, Ohio and a 2006 Honda Civic driven by 39-year-old Mark Aldana of Alliance, Ohio, were both traveling northbound on Interstate 71. Brown and Aldana's vehicles made contact in the left lane of I-71 northbound. Aldana lost control and went into the median striking the cable rail. Aldana was then struck by a southbound 2007 Volvo commercial truck driven by 56-year-old Qiang Zhao of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Aldana and Zhao traveled off the right side of the road and came to rest in a ravine. Aldana was entrapped for approximately 30 minutes and had to be extricated by the Troy Township EMS. He was taken to Med-Central Mansfield with serious injuries.
Two other southbound vehicles became involved in another crash attempting to avoid the first collision. A 2012 Mazda 6 driven by 38-year-old Shantrina Banks of Cincinnati was traveling southbound and was slowing due to the accident. A 2004 Nissan Armada driven by 26-year-old Xiomara Perdomo was also southbound and was not able to slow in time, striking Banks. Both vehicles were carrying passengers and claimed minor injuries but refused treatment.
All three lanes of I-71 south were closed for nearly 4 hours. ODOT set up detours for southbound traffic on I-71.
The crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued at this time. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
