More than 250 Chihuahuas, other dogs removed from Shelby kennel get loving homes

SHELBY, Ohio - More than 250 Chihuahuas and one sick kitten all have loving homes after being rescued from a Shelby puppy mill.
The Richland County Humane Society, along with several other agencies, made the rescue possible.
A post on the humane society's Facebook page noted the dogs that haven't been adopted yet are now in the care of humane shelters.
The animals were taken in last week from a Kennel in Shelby. It took more than a dozen volunteers several hours to clean up the mess.
Officials believe the owner of the business, who has cancer, tried to take care of the animals, but couldn't keep up with the demand once her husband died from a heart attack and her sickness worsened.
According to the Chihuahua Club of America, the kennel owner operated a kennel first in New Jersey before Ohio. The agency said the owner was convicted of animal cruelty in New Jersey.
