RAVENNA, Ohio - The starving and near-death dog that was rescued in Portage County is improving.

Eeyore, a boxer/mastiff mix, was suffering from hypothermia, weighed a mere 47 pounds, and was eating mulch and rocks because he was so hungry. The staff at the Portage Animal Protective League was horrified when he was first brought to them in mid-October.

On Wednesday, Portage APL Executive Director Chalan Lowry said Eeyore is eating more than seven cups a food a day, which is more than a dog his size should be eating, as they try to get him to a healthy weight. The poor pup should weigh about 90 pounds.

Lowry said Eeyore, whose bones still show, is much more energetic and even tugs on the leash.

“He has skin issues so it was hard to get photos. He kept rubbing his face on the staff and then wanting to look around at everything. Good sign, but not great for pictures,” Lowry said. “He is making stead progress.”

Donations to the Portage APL can be made by calling 330-296-4022. You can also follow them on Facebook or visit their website: http://portageapl.org/Donate_Online .
