KENT, Ohio - The life of Army Spc. Adam Hamilton continues to inspire even those who never met the Kent native killed in action in Afghanistan one year ago.

On Monday, a Memorial Day tribute honored Hamilton by naming a section of North Mantua Street, across from Roosevelt High School, after him for service to his country.

Hamilton was 22 years old when he died on May 28, 2011 when a bomb exploded.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2007, where he was an outstanding athlete and leader.

Jonathan Miller is a high school alum and, though he never knew Hamilton, his life remains filled with meaning.

"Just what he did for us," said Miller, "willing to sacrifice himself--you don't take everyday for granted."

Joel Rhoads is another Kent area resident who never met Hamilton, but feels a strong connection.

"It means a lot to our community," said Rhoads, " and I would just like to thank him for what he did for our country."

Hamilton's gravestone is marked with the prophetic words he wrote home just days before he died.

In his letter, Hamilton told his family to "gaze up at the sky when they go out at night," because he would be the brightest star, "looking down on you".

Contributions to a scholarship fund may be made in Hamilton's memory at Portage Community Bank branches in Kent and Ravenna.
