COLUMBUS, Ohio - A northeast Ohio congressman says he's decided not to run for governor in 2014.

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, a Niles Democrat, said in a statement Friday that he believes he will be able to do more for his region, state and country remaining as a congressman.

Ryan's decision comes on the heels of a Monday announcement by Democratic Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald that he's formed a committee to explore challenging Republican Gov. John Kasich next year.

Ryan's represents a safely Democratic congressional district. Sixty percent of voters there supported Democratic then-Gov. Ted Strickland in the 2010 race he lost to Kasich.

Former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton and former Ohio Attorney General Richard Corday, the federal consumer watchdog, are among other Democrats who could make gubernatorial runs.
