MEDINA, Ohio - Ohio Gov. John Kasich is about to sign a bill that would no longer classify pit bulls as vicious dogs. In the wake of a recent dogfighting raid, this news could help more of the animals get adopted.
Two pit bulls were recently taken in by the Medina County SPCA were pregnant, but those litters almost didn’t survive.
“She was pregnant and getting very close to having her babies, but she was also on their euthanasia list,” Executive Director of the Medina County SPCA Stephanie Moore said of Faith and her eight little ones. Misty also brought eight pups into the world the other day.
Rescued from another kennel, the Medina County SPCA thought it was best to give the newborn pups a chance. Being pit bulls, these dogs are often perceived as vicious, making them difficult to adopt.
“Any dog can be a vicious breed if brought up that way,” said Erica Moehring, with the Medina County SPCA.
Ohio is one of only a few states that classifies pit bulls as vicious. House Bill 14 would change that and all it needs is Kasich’s signature to end what some consider discrimination against the breed.
"We just hate to see any animal not given a chance at life,” Moore said. “The bottom line is it's our responsibility. We have domesticated these animals and we are responsible." The Medina County SPCA is thankful that Ohio may soon hold dog owners more responsible for their pets. Any breed can be vicious and each case should be examined individually.
"The people of Ohio are really stepping up to the plate and coming to the aid of the animals that desperately need their help,” Moore said. “I think the governor is listening so hopefully we'll get this passed."

At the end of last year, Cleveland police confiscated 27 pit bulls, mostly puppies, from a house on the city's east side. Officers described the conditions as "horrific," and many of those dogs still need expensive medical treatment.
