SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A 27-year-old woman has been charged with hitting two brothers with her car and then taking off.
The Elyria Highway Patrol Post charged Maxine L. Whitfield of Lorain with hit skip, vehicular assault and tampering with evidence in connection with the hit-skip injury traffic crash that occurred June 13 on Clifton avenue in Sheffield Township.
Matthew Hollingsworth,17, had his 4-year-old brother Thomas Harrington Jr. on his shoulders walking northbound on the eastside of Clifton Avenue when they were struck by a 1997 Green Toyota Camry driven by Whitfield.
According to a witness, the vehicle did not stop, but instead she accelerated away from the scene.
Matthew and Charles were lying in the roadway when a motorist stopped to help them. The motorist took the boys home to their parents who then called EMA, a press release from the highway patrol said.
The Lorain County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash as the witness believed the boys had been shot when she observed them fall.
The victims were transported to Lorain Mercy Hospital and then flown by St. Vincent Life Flight to Rainbow Babies and Children Hospital in Cleveland. They were treated and released the next day.
