LORAIN, Ohio - A Lorain house fire that possibly sparked from a lit cigarette has left a 4-year-old boy with severe burns.
Flames broke out inside the house in the 1000 block of West 19th St. Saturday around 1 a.m.
Authorities said nine people were reported inside the home when the blaze broke out, seven of them were children, said Lorain Assistant Fire Chief, Dennis Livchak.
Bloody footprints belonging to the 4-year-old still covered the sidewalk Sunday, the street, even the porch of a neighbor’s house. Those neighbors spoke to NewsChannel5 Sunday, saying the mother of the 4-year-old was with the child and several other kids as she screamed for help.
Gilbert and Mary Amador told NewsChannel5 they brought the family inside and called police.
“I didn’t realize the little boy was burned right at first because I was calling 911 but I came back in the house, he was just, totally, his skin was completely coming off,” said Mary Amador.
Still in shock, the couple described the boy’s condition in graphic detail.
“It was horrible. It was like … it would’ve been a glove if he would’ve peeled it off, his hands and his feet. It was that much of a piece of skin that would’ve come off. I didn’t realize that something like that could happen,” said Amador.
“I looked at him, I knew he was pretty bad and burned up, but he wasn’t crying or nothing … I didn’t know what to do for him because I couldn’t give him first aid or nothing,” said Gilbert Amador.
The young boy was first taken to Mercy Medical Center and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in serious condition.
The home has been deemed a total loss.
“We had heavy fire showing from the first floor extending up to the second floor and into the small attic that was there,” said Assistant Chief Livchak.
Lorain’s Assistant Fire Chief told NewsChannel5 both the Fire Prevention Bureau and the Ohio State Fire Marshall are now involved in an investigation and are expected to release results, including the cause of fire Monday.
