LORAIN, Ohio - A Father's Day family feud at a funeral home landed two women in jail, while an assault victim was left bloodied and missing hair.
Lorain police went to Dovin Funeral Home on Elyria Avenue just after 4 p.m. Sunday for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Sonia Figueroa, with a bloody cheek and a clump of hair missing.
Figueroa told police the fight started because she sat in the front row during visiting hours.
The visitation was for the father of suspect Maria Ortiz, 48, of New York. Police arrested Ortiz and her daughter, Natashia Adames, 29, also of New York. They're both facing assault charges and were taken to the Lorain City Jail.
In the police report, Figueroa states Oriz and Adames "jumped her due to an ongoing family feud."
Figueroa's mother, Sonia Figueroa, reportedly tried to break up the fight. She also was allegedly attacked by the suspects, but the police report noted she did not have any visible physical injuries.
The suspects tell a different story.
Ortiz told police she got up from her seat to go outside with her daughter. When Ortiz and Adames returned to the visitation for Ortiz's father, Figueroa started kicking and attacking her and her daughter when they tried to get back into the front row, Ortiz said.
The police response to the funeral home feud was massive. The report stated the entire afternoon shift went to the call because of the reports of shots fired. Police never found a gun, but officers did find a 12-inch knife with knuckle cut-outs under a floor mat in Ortiz's car. Ortiz told police the knife belonged to her deceased father.
Officers interviewed witnesses at the funeral home, some of whom named Oritz and her daughter Adames as the primary aggressors. Other witnesses did not want to make a statement.
