AVON LAKE, Ohio - Firefighters battled a fire on the third floor of an apartment building in Avon Lake Thursday morning that displaced dozens of people.
The fire started at about 10:30 a.m. at the Somerset Apartments. Fire crews reported flames shooting from the building when they arrived at the scene.
All of the residents were able to make it out safely, but most of the building’s roof is gone and there is extensive smoke and water damage inside.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one building.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office said it has two investigators and a supervisor assigned to the case to help determine the cause.
Investigators are looking for witnesses or anyone who might have been home at the apartments when the fire first started. They are urged to call the fire marshal’s office at 1-800-589-2728.
The Red Cross said it is helping 28 to 38 people in 17 different families who were displaced by the fire.
