LORAIN, Ohio - Workers at the Lorain Animal Clinic say Herbie continues to get better, gain weight, play and is finally able to walk on his own.
On Friday, the workers said when they arrived they found Herbie hugging one of the stuffed angels someone bought for him.
"His appetite is increasing. He stood on his own yesterday for the first time, but can't stand for very long. Herbie is very thankful for everyone's generous support!" said a post on the clinic's website.
An Awareness Walk took place Sunday at Streator Park to educate people about animal cruelty and try to find the person responsible for Herbie's abuse.
New bloodwork done Tuesday on Herbie showed his white blood cell count is still elevated, but the clinic said he's getting antibiotics every day to help with his infection.
Herbie's red blood cell count was also low, meaning he's still anemic, but it's getting better every day, according to the clinic.
"He did walk outside for us today and his weight was 47 pounds!"
Herbie was found earlier this month barely alive in the 800 block of West 11th St., weighing only 25 pounds, when he should've weighed 75 pounds. Officials believe Herbie had previously been caged, neglected and dumped.
Donations for Herbie can be sent to the Wood Foundation in care of Lorain Animal Clinic. The Wood Foundation is located at 4205 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44053. It's a non-profit that provides care for injured and abused animals.
