ELYRIA, Ohio - Six local women will receive the Women of Compassion Award during a reception at Lorain County Community College on Oct. 11.

The joint effort by The Community Foundation of Lorain County and Lorain County Community College celebrates the women and the extra work they do to help others while making their community a better place.

A volunteer committee selected the following recipients of the Fifth Annual Women of Compassion Awards. Gioavana Cruz Kallas, Jaime Frizzell, Sherrill Mcloda, Martha Pye, June Yost and Mika Timura.

Timura, is a senior in high school, but the Community Foundation said she already has an impressive record of helping others. Timura uses money from her part-time job to sponsor a child in Southeast Asia, volunteers at the Angel Horse Rescue in Grafton, and collected items for children in a hospital in Peru. All of that while being an active Girl Scout.

All of the award winners will be recognized during a gala luncheon Oct. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at the Spitzer Conference Center on the campus of Lorain County Community College.
