VERMILION, Ohio - An 11-year-old boy at Sailorway Middle School in Vermilion was arrested Tuesday, accused of making menacing threats at school, police said.

The boy was in class when the threats were made. He was taken to the principal's office where he was then transported to a juvenile detention center.

Parents of the students were notified by phone, email and text.

The email sent out by the district's superintendent said:

"This is a message from Superintendent Phil Pempin.  Many parents have expressed concern today regarding school safety.  I would like to assure all of our families that we continue to work closely with our local police department, our school resource officer and staff to be sure that all schools are safe and secure.  Any and all threats that are made are taken seriously, and are investigated on a case-by-case basis.  Parents will be informed promptly if it is determined that there is a credible threat to our security.  We will follow all of the procedures outlined in our Crisis plan if necessary.  In the meantime, our schools remain open through Friday.  Our teachers and support staff will be in the schools and conducting business as usual."
