CLEVELAND - The United Way of Lake County will continue to financially support the Boy Scouts.
This comes on the heels of an announcement by the United Way of Greater Cleveland, stating that it is moving to pull its funding next year from the Boy Scouts of America, after the group reaffirmed its prohibition of openly gay youth and adults.
The Boy Scouts' ban violates a new United Way of Greater Cleveland equal opportunity and diversity policy.
Nick Carrabine, with the Lake County chapter of the United Way, explained that each United Way is local and owned by specific communities, and that funding is on a county-by-county basis.
"United Way of Lake County gives appro $74,000 a year to Greater Western Reserve Boy Scout Council programs. All money funded in Lake County stays in Lake County," said Carrabine. "Our funding is for local use only and not any national dues."
