MENTOR, Ohio - A retired Mentor police officer entered a written plea of guilty Tuesday in connection to his wife's death.

Gary Stroud now admits to killing his wife, Diane Stroud, 53, in late 2011.

Diane's body was found in the couple's home in the 5600 block of Marine Pkwy. in November. The couple's daughter called police to report a foul smell coming from the garage that she thought was a dead animal.

An investigation uncovered Gary lied to his kids, telling them his mother had been missing for 6 weeks because she joined a cult, court documents noted.

Diane Stroud was once the council president for Mentor-on-the-Lake.

Gary Stroud will be sentenced for murder and gross abuse of a corpse charges on Aug. 8 at 3 p.m. before Judge Joseph Gibson in Lake County Common Pleas Court.
