MENTOR, Ohio - After nearly seven hours, a standoff with an armed man on Mansion Boulevard in Mentor has ended peacefully, according to police.
Police were called about a disturbance at Mentor Square Apartments on Center Street just before 5 p.m. Thursday, but when officers said they tried to talk to Antonio Iaconianni, he ran off. Police said it appeared he was carrying a handgun in his waistband, and a search perimeter was set up.
Officers found Iaconianni hiding under a porch on Mansion Drive. After repeated requests to come out with no action, police pepper-sprayed him – but he then pointed his gun at officers, the department said.
That action prompted police to call in the Mentor SWAT and Hostage Negotiations Team.
At about midnight, the man surrendered to police. Police said no shots were fired and no one was injured in the ordeal.
Officers charged 24-year-old Iaconianni with several counts including inducing panic, carrying a concealed weapon and aggravated menacing.
Part of the area was evacuated during that standoff. Residents were allowed back to their homes just after 12:15 a.m. Friday.
Iaconianni was arraigned on the charges Friday morning.
