19-year-old George Caldwell charged with assault after Painesville Township stabbing

PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A man is in the intensive care unit, another under arrest after a stabbing in Painesville Township Saturday morning.

The incident happened was first reported at 1:18 a.m. Saturday when the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 hang-up calls from a home on Newell Street.

When deputies arrived, they found that 24-year-old Delonta Gilree had been stabbed in the chest and abdominal area. He was transported to Tri-Point Hospital and the taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he had to undergo surgery.

Investigators identified the suspect as 19-year-old George Caldwell, who told deputies he and Gilree had been involved in a physical fight and he had stabbed Gilree, according to the sheriff’s department. Caldwell then turned over a folding knife to deputies.

Caldwell was also taken to the hospital, but only had superficial injuries, deputies said. He was then taken to the Lake County Jail on charges of felonious assault and underage consumption.

Caldwell was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Dec. 24.
