Two men hurt when small plane crashes in Holmes County field

BALTIC, Ohio - Two men from West Virginia were injured in a small plane crash in Holmes County on Thursday.
Residents saw the twin-engine plan crash into a field near 1700 Township Road 174 in Clark Township at about 9:20 a.m., the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office said.
The pilot, 60-year-old Floyd S. Pierson, was already out of the plane when emergency crews arrived. The passenger, 51-year-old Charles W. Stevens, was seriously injured, according to the sheriff’s office. Both men were taken by medical helicopter to Akron General Hospital. Pierson’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Pierson told investigators that he was hired to fly the 1957 Piper Apache from the Akron-Canton Airport to Charleston, West Virginia. The sheriff’s office said the plane started to have engine problems about 8 miles from the crash site.
The pilot had to shut down both the failing engines and was able to clear a few trees, before crashing the plane in an open field. Parts of the plane were removed and taken to the Holmes County Airport for further investigation by the NTSB.
