COLUMBUS, Ohio - State lawmakers are wearing red and black ribbons in remembrance of three northeast Ohio students gunned down a year ago by another teenager.
The Ohio House observed a moment of silence Wednesday to recognize the Feb. 27, 2012, shooting at Chardon High School, near Cleveland.
State Rep. John Patterson, who represents Chardon, said he planned to introduce a bill to designate highways in the names of the three victims: 16-year-olds Daniel Parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin and 17-year-old Russell King Jr.
Patterson told his colleagues that they couldn't control tragedies or fully prevent them. And the Jefferson Democrat encouraged parents to tell their children they love them.
The observances came one day after the gunman, T.J. Lane, now 18, pleaded guilty to charges in the students' deaths.
