COLUMBUS, Ohio - One of the first two police officers who responded to the deadly high school shooting last month in Chardon described the students as fairly calm and helpful when they arrived at the building.
Officer Matt DeLisa told The Associated Press on Wednesday there wasn't chaos and screaming when he entered the building on Feb. 27, and many students and staff were helpful in allowing them to secure the school.
Three students were killed and two others were seriously wounded in the shooting at Chardon High School. TJ Lane, 17, has been charged with three counts of aggravated murder among other charges.
DeLisa was among the 50 police officers, firefighters and other first responders honored by the Ohio Legislature with standing ovations and applause during their visit to Columbus.
Kasich tweeted that he was "humbled" to have them at the closed-door meeting.
