MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio - Authorities have provided details about the two Middlefield police officers shot by a suspect during a traffic stop Sunday night.
Officer Brandon Savage has served as an officer in the Village for the past five years. He is the departmental field training officer, defensive tactics instructor and background investigator for newly hired officers. He has also received specialized training in active shooter responses.
Savage is currently at home with family continuing to recuperate.
Officer Erin Thomas was also shot and remains hospitalized, the Geauga County Sheriff said. They hope she will be released in the next day or so.
Thomas was hired just a month ago in February but is a veteran officer with five years of experience. When the incident occurred, Thomas was completing her field training program.
The suspect, 42-year-old James Gilkerson, was shot and killed at the scene after firing at the officers.
Police said there is no more information about the ongoing investigation at this time.
