CHARDON, Ohio - A Geauga County judge has ordered a competency evaluation for the suspect in a shooting at Chardon High School last month.
TJ Lane, 17, was scheduled to appear for a hearing April 3, but Judge Timothy Grendell moved it back to April 9 after deciding to proceed with the evaluation.
The April 9 hearing will determine when Lane’s competency and probable cause/bindover hearings will be held. The case is still being handled in juvenile court – at least for now.
Police said Lane opened up fire in the cafeteria of the school Feb. 27, killing three students and injuring two others. He allegedly fled the school and surrendered more than an hour later.
