CHESTERLAND, Ohio - Chardon High School junior Nick Walczak remains hospitalized, following the deadly Feb. 27 shooting. On Sunday, dozens of people raised money to help him.
The fundraiser took place at X-CEL Athletics Cheer and Tumble Academy in Chesterland, where two of Walczak's cousins are coaches.
"He is really positive. His attitude is unbelievable. Every time I see him, I hear him say, so often, I am going to do this and be able to walk again," said Walczak's cousin Missy Kinkopf.
X-CEL donated the facility and the staff donated their time for tumbling and stunting clinics. The cost was $5 per athlete and all of the money raised will go to help Walczak recover.
Melanie Vitale organized the fundraiser and said, "We felt we wanted to do something to support him."
Walczak was shot multiple times in his neck, arm and back. Three students were killed during the shooting.
Alleged gunman T.J. Lane, 17, remains in the juvenile detention center, awaiting his next court appearance.
