Former Geauga County prosecutor now Congressman David Joyce recalls shooting at Chardon High School

CHARDON, Ohio - Before he headed to Washington, David Joyce spent more than two decades as the Geauga County prosecutor and recalled Feb. 27, 2012 as "the darkest day of my 25 years as a prosecutor."

David Joyce is among the newest members of Congress, being sworn in to represent Ohio's 14th District last month.

The emotion of the Chardon High School shooting is still clearly on his face when he thinks back to that cold, and deadly winter morning. It was a day that affected so many. Some of the very people who were first to respond to the school that day had their own children inside.

"They would work to make everyone safe, all the while wondering where is my child? That takes a lot out of people. Til this day, it breaks my heart inside that school," explained Joyce.

Although, Feb. 27, 2012 was perhaps the darkest day in the Chardon community, Joyce said the people are  healing. Although it will never be the same, perhaps there is some good which has come from evil.

"Although he tore the fabric of our community, all of a sudden people were opening doors for each other, asking 'how ya doing?' And stopping to listen. Asking 'how ya doing' instead of walking by each other," Joyce said.
