CHARDON, Ohio - The Geauga County Recorder's Office has gone to the dogs - literally.

The public counter inside Recorder Sharon C. Gingerich's office on Chardon's town square is covered with dog bowls.

Each unique bowl is handmade by a student at West Geauga High School in nearby Chesterland, Ohio.

The ceramic dishes are part of an annual silent auction and fundraising dinner benefiting the Geauga County Dog Shelter . The 2012 benefit will take place the evening of April, 20, at the Chardon United Methodist Church.

"Last year, the Dog Warden took in 700 dogs," said Gingerich. "400 were adopted and 300 were reunited with their owners. And so this money that we raise for him helps with the vaccines and the medicines to take care of those dogs."

Gingerich told newsnet5.com the county's dog shelter is one of the least funded county government organizations - making the annual fundraiser crucial to the welfare of canines in the area.

Gingerich also said the money raised this year will be shared with the Geauga County Sheriff's K-9 unit which lost two canine officers to illness last year.

"He's got three new canines, so we're going to split it half-and-half," Gingerich said.

In addition to the dog bowls, there will be many other donated prizes available for auction bid at the event.

Tickets to the benefit dinner and silent auction can be obtained through the Geauga County Recorder's Office.
