CHARDON, Ohio - A judge in Geauga County must decide whether a 17-year-old boy is mentally competent to stand trial in the deaths of three students in a school shooting.
Judge Timothy Grendell in Geauga County Juvenile Court will hear from both sides Wednesday in the case of T.J. Lane. He is charged in the Feb. 27 Chardon High School rampage that left three students dead and two seriously wounded.
Lane could face trial as an adult if he's ruled mentally competent. Under a new state law, a child may be found competent only if he's able to grasp the seriousness of the charges and able to understand the proceedings.
The prosecutor has said that Lane "is not well."
