Chardon High School shooter TJ Lane 'KILLER' T-shirt controversy continues

CHARDON, Ohio - Chardon High School shooter TJ Lane caused outrage and shock to those inside and outside the Geauga County courtroom where he was sentenced to life without parole for the triple murder on Tuesday.

As soon as he entered the courtroom, the 18-year-old killer took off his dress shirt to unveil a white T-shirt with the word "KILLER" scribbled on it.

"We were as surprised as anyone when this happened. Immediately upon leaving the courtroom, I called and began looking into how this happened," explained Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland.

McClelland said Lane likely did it in his cell Monday night, using a rubber pen that is required to be issued to each inmate so they can communicate with the outside world and aid them in preparation of their defense.

The court issued the following statement about not seeing the vulgar attire:

Except when the judge entered the courtroom the defendant was seated for the entire sentencing. The court was unaware of the shirt. The court did not notice the shirt.

Had the court noticed the shirt, the court would have immediately stopped the proceedings, adjourned the court and the court would have ordered the defendant to put on proper attire.

However disgusting it may be, the defendant has a right to make a statement at sentencing.

The T-shirt was only part of the courtroom antics by Lane, who smirked, smiled and flipped off families of the victims as they read statements.

On Wednesday, Lane was moved from the Geauga County Jail to the Lorain Correctional Facility in Grafton.

Judge David Fuhry sentenced Lane to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He opened fire in the school's cafeteria on Feb. 27, 2012 killing Daniel Parmertor, Demetrius Hewlin and Russell King Jr., while injuring three others.
