SANDUSKY, Ohio - The Space Spiral at Cedar Point came falling down Wednesday morning to make room for the amusement park’s first winged roller coaster.

Crews cut into the ride’s base, and then placed about 10 pounds of explosives at precise points to bring the 330-foot tower down, Cedar Point said. They were able to predict where Space Spiral would land, so crews dug a hole that cushioned the impact.
The ride had been in operation since 1965, but closed on Aug. 14 to prepare for demolition.
This part of the park will be the new home to GateKeeper, a winged coaster that takes riders through more than 4,000 feet of steel track at 67 mph.
Construction begins this fall and GateKeeper is set to open in May 2013. It will be the longest winged roller coaster in the world with its blue, tubular track.
Part of the Space Spiral will live on in Cedar Point’s ride graveyard during HalloWeekends. It joins other fallen rides, like Rotor Pirate Ride, Earthquake and Frontier Lift.
