ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - The wife of iconic the WEWS Christmas-time character Mr. Jingeling passed away last week.
Nadine Keyes, a longtime school teacher in Westlake, died at the age of 91 on Oct. 12 at her home in Rocky River.
Earl Keyes was an original WEWS employee when the station went on the air in December 1947. In 1965, he became the keeper of Santa’s keys, Mr. Jingeling, and would continue to make appearances until his death on Dec. 26, 2000.
Nadine Keyes sometimes appeared as Mrs. Jingeling at Halle’s and later at Higbee’s in downtown Cleveland. She also made the costumes by hand and is listed as the co-author of a children’s book called “How Mr. Jingeling Saved Christmas.”
Up until Nadine’s death, the Mr. Jingeling’s keys remained on their fireplace.
