EUCLID, Ohio - Fire officials called a blaze on Hillandale Drive in Euclid “stubborn,” as it continued to flare back up.
The fire started shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday at a two-story house. Both Willowick and Wickliffe fire departments were also called to the scene.
“We had a problem because there were bars on the windows on the first floor here,” Cpt. Will Anderson said. He said the fire was in the basement and on the second floor.
No one was home at the time. Anderson said the occupants left the house at about 4 p.m.
“We attacked the fire from the outside,” Anderson said. When conditions worsened, all of the firefighters were pulled out of the house. “We were going to go back in, but that’s when it took a turn for the worse. It flared up again.”
More than four hours later, firefighters were still battling a few hot shots. Investigators have yet to determine a cause.
No injuries were reported. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
