SOLON. Ohio - Police said a suspect is dead after fleeing officers during an attempted traffic stop in Solon Sunday night, in which shots were fired at officers.

The Solon Police Department said an officer conducted a traffic stop just after 9:45 p.m. on Bainbridge Road at Sharondale Drive.

During the course of the stop, the offender fled in his vehicle turning on to Sunnywood Drive where he was drove over a curb.

Officers were able to re-establish contact with the suspect at that location, where they came under fire. One officer took rounds to both the chest and left arm, but was wearing a bulletproof vest

The suspect succumbed to return fire and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said the victim has been identified as Kevin Bailey, 22, of Sylvania Township. The office said he was shot four times.

Both involved officers were treated and released from the Cleveland Clinic Twinsburg Emergency Department. They have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under review.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which police said will take several weeks.

"This is one of those events that no one thinks will ever happen in the suburbs. It is what we train for but hope won’t come to pass,” Chief Christopher Viland said in a news release.
