PARMA, Ohio - A 21-year-old suspect is in custody after an early morning standoff Wednesday in Parma Wednesday.
Parma police responded to a call from a tenant inside an apartment building at 7027 State Rd. who reported that a man living on the third-floor apartment was yelling and breaking windows. The man spotted officers outside his apartment and yelled out that he was armed with a “Mac-10” machine pistol and they should put their hands up.
According to police, the suspect demanded officers give him a phone. Residents in nearby buildings were evacuated and State Road was shut down.
Parma police and SWAT were at the scene with a crisis negotiator at Tower View Apartments at 6 a.m.
The man refused to leave his apartment and stopped speaking with negotiators. SWAT officers were able to open the apartment door. The suspect fled to another area in the apartment and resisted arrest. Officers used a taser to assist in the arrest.
The man was transported to Parma Hospital with self-inflicted wounds, according to police. He will also undergo a mental evaluation.
Suspect did not have a firearm, police said.
Police asked residents to stay clear of State Road between Klusner and Hilltop Avenue until further notice.
