Pets of Cracker Barrel shooting victim Kayla Allen at animal rescue, fundraisers set

CLEVELAND - Friends and family of the 10-year-old girl who survived the deadly shootings at the Brooklyn Cracker Barrel hope to raise a lot of money Thursday to help with the girl's recovery.

Several Bob Evans locations in the region will donate 15 percent of customers' bills to the Kayla Allen Benefit Fund. The donation offer is good from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at several Bob Evans locations.

Kayla Allen survived a shooting by her father, Kevin, at her sister's birthday party last month.

To make sure part of your bill goes to benefit Kayla, download the flyer at the fund's Facebook page . Participating Bob Evans locations are in Independence, in Cleveland on Brookpark Road, Elyria, North Olmsted, Amherst, Avon, Beachwood, South Euclid, Brunswick and Middleburg Heights.

Meanwhile, the family's pets are getting care at the Berea Animal Rescue. Strongsville Animal Control Officer Mike Roth said he was called to the family's home the night of the shootings.

"I didn't know what the situation was," Roth said. He only knew the family was in some kind of trouble and the pets needed attention.

Roth took three dogs, two cats, a rabbit, ferrets and some hamsters to the Berea Animal Rescue.

The rescue opens at 2 p.m. weekdays and newsnet5.com is waiting for updates on the adoption status of the animals. Roth said he believed one of the dogs was set to be cared for by a family friend or family member.

Kayla is the only survivor of the deadly shooting. Police said Kevin Allen opened fire at the restaurant in April killing Kayla's sister, Kerri, and their mother, Kate.

Police shot and killed Kevin when officers said he failed to obey their surrender orders.

Kayla remains in serious condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Another future benefit also is set at Barbarino's Restaurant in Columbia Station from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on May 17.
